Let’s Talk Water Temperature. Orlando Swimming Pools Still Freezing

iceberg swimming pool

Have you stuck your hand in your pool lately? We have, and let it be known….your water is still ice cold!

Water temperature doesn’t play a huge role in chemical balance, unless you’re dealing with hot tubs or winterized pools (water below 40 degrees), but people still ask about it.

So here are a few simple facts about swimming pool water temperature:

  • If your swimming pool is screened in, your pool water will always be roughly 10 degrees cooler than open pools.
  • A backyard with a southern is exposure is almost always best for pools. This will give your pool the maximum sunlight during the Summer.
  • Water is the slowest element to change temperature. Even if it’s a very hot day out, there’s a good chance your water temperature is only creeping up a degree or two at a time.
  • Heat pumps are all the rage – for now. Basically, pump and heater manufacturers have merged products, and the result is a pump system that heats water faster, and uses less energy. This could all change in the next few years with the growing demand for multi-speed pumps, but for now, they are a great option.
  • If you decide to brave the cold water, and you start shivering, you may be entering hypothermia.

World’s Largest Swimming Pool Dwarfs Our Own Lake Nona

Cleaning and servicing pools in the Lake Nona area, we’ve come across our share of large and unique pools, but they are merely drops of water compared to the world’s largest pool!

This man-made wonder is 1013 meters long covers 80 acres, its deepest end reaches 115ft and it holds 66 million gallons of water. If you want to take a dip in the world’s largest swimming pool you’ll have to travel to San Alfonso del Mar in Algarrobo, Chile, where a computer-controlled suction and filtration system continuously pumps water from the ocean, keeping crystal clear.

Although it wasn’t cheap, costing around $2 billion to build and another $4 million/year for maintenance, the pool seems to be worth it as it has been attracting huge crowds of curious tourists, since it opened in December.

Turn Your Swimming Pool into Snot…Then Back Again

kids-gellibaff

Last week, there was a Toy Fair in NYC, and while we were too busy attending the Orlando Pool and Spa Show in our own town, it didn’t stop us from checking out the newest tech introduced there.

Our top pick is this stuff, Gelli Baff from the UK, it turns bathtubs of water into goo – no really, thick like beaded snot, but in fun fruit flavors – then back to water so it can go down the drain. You’re going to want to skip ahead in the video to see the magic transformation, then skip over to the Gelli Baff UK site o use their “pool calculator” (half way down page) to figure out how many boxes will change your in-ground into the stuff of legends, before hitting Amazon for the goods.

This is one of those posts that will make zero difference in your life, but this morning I realized that the word “Swims,” is the same word if you look at it upside down. See….I told you it was pointless. Hopefully someone else will be as blown away by this realization as I was.

Current Pool Trends in the Lake Nona and Southeast Orlando areas

Posted on 18. Jan, 2010 by admin in Pool Tips

going green

With the vision of the Lake nona Medical Center on the horizon, the area has seen continued growth and home construction, while other areas aren’t as fortunate. More homes being built means more pools being built, and we always find it interesting to study new trends in the pool industry.

Over the past few years, we have noticed a trend moving to smaller swimming pools being built with a focus on safety, versatility, and “green” benefits being demanded by the homeowner.

Drowning and accidental injuries taking place in pools has become a common topic in the news, and homeowners are actively looking for ways to reduce or eliminate this risk. We’re seeing automated pool covers and various fencing options to address this concern, but very few products offer the aesthetics that some homes require.

“Green” is the new black. Homeowners are embracing ways to be conscientious consumers when it comes to our planet’s limited resources. They are looking at ways to reduce water, chemical, and energy usage and of course save money at the same time. More and more, consumers are demanding real green solutions, especially when it comes to their swimming pools. There are many changes coming to address these concerns, and it will change the way people view the purchase of a residential swimming pool [more info on this in the VERY near future].

Lastly, due to the long term trend of new homes being built on small lots, homeowners are looking to get the most versatility from their backyard investments. They are looking to create as much versatility as possible with the limited space that they might have, as well as trying to create long term value when they are ready to sell their home in the future.

Warmer Weather in Lake Nona – Adjust Your Timers

Posted on 14. Jan, 2010 by admin in Pool Tips

SunnySkies

For the past two weeks, the Lake Nona area, and most of Orlando has suffered from hard freezes. We’ve been asking everyone to run their swimming pools through the night to avoid damage from ice forming in the pipes and pump. Well, it looks like that’s all behind us now. If you set your times to run through the night, you’re now free to change it back to run during the day. We will be getting another cold front pushing through, but it will be nothing like what we’ve faced the past two weeks. If you have any questions, call us at 407-243-8383.
